DOES YOUR WATERPROOF JACKET NEED A CLEAN!

Look at the surface of your waterproof jacket next time you’re out in the rain. Does the exterior soak up water like a towel?

This phenomenon is called “wetting out.”

Wetting out is an indication that your performance jacket isn’t working to its full potential. The solution to this is remarkably simple:  Clean your jacket!

The key to keeping waterproof, breathable products working properly is to keep them clean with an appropriate technical cleaner.

Household detergents leave behind a residue that attracts water to the surface fabric, which can cause wetting out. By cleaning with the right cleaner, the water-attracting contaminants are removed. See our range of Grangers Cleaners.

Many people are intimidated to wash their expensive technical jackets.

 Don’t be!

Let’s walk through two signs that you need to wash yours—and how to do it.

THE SIGNS

WETTING OUT

When water soaks into and spreads across the surface of the fabric, it  prevents the breathable layer from working. This is a sign that the durable water repellent (DWR) surface treatment has been compromised. This is when a good cleaning—and possibly re-waterproofing—can improve your experience.

VISIBLE DIRT & STAINS

Outdoor life is messy, which is often part of the fun. Luckily if your rain shell gets muddy in camp or doused with your morning mochaccino, you can clean it to remove the crud.

TO CLEAN

Step1

WASH: To start, hand wash in a sink or open bucket with warm water, you can use a soft dishwasher like brush on the outside of the jacket (not inside) to get the dirt & grime off. Close zippers and hook-and-loop (Velcro) Wash or rinse thoroughly.

Step 2

Waterproof: If after a wash your jacket is still wetting out, you may need to re-waterproof the garment. There is a few ways you can do this using (DWR) treatments. See below for more information on  waterproofing treatments.

Step 3

Dry: Review the manufacturer’s instructions for care of your garment. Bushbuck waterproof gear can be tumble dried on low heat or line dried away from direct sunlight.

WARNING: Read the care instructions on your garment. For our Bushbuck waterproof garments we advise you  NOT TO machine wash, hand wash in warm water using non-detergent soap.

WATERPROOFING TREATMENTS

Grangers Clothing Wash & Repel Waterproofing. (DWR)

  • Grangers Clothing Wash & Repel Waterproofing. (DWR) Use two 50ml capfuls per outdoor jacket or garment. For best results,  we recommend washing waterproof garments separately.

  • Tumble dry on  a low heat, or dry under the heat pump alternatively you can dry in front of the fire (not to close as to much heat can de-laminate seam seals).

Grangers Performance Repel Waterproofing Spray. (DWR)

  • Spray Xtreme Repel directly onto a freshly cleaned, damp garment from around 15cm away.
  • Remove any excess drips or droplets with a clean cloth
  • .Dry the garment in a tumble drier, following the recommendations of the garment care label.

Grangers Tent & Gear Repel

  • Ensure article being treated is clean.
  • Tent + Gear Repel is best applied to damp or wet fabric. Wash, spray, or otherwise wet fabric before application.
  • Decant product into a container and brush or sponge on evenly.
  • Wait 2-3 minutes before removing excess product with a damp cloth.
