The Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust’s mission is to contract, fund and promote a professional emergency air rescue and air ambulance service. Canterbury’s Westpac Rescue Helicopter and West Coast’s NZCC Rescue Helicopter cover the largest geographical area in New Zealand, watching over the lives of more than 600,000 people. From the rugged coastlines and vast rural landscapes to lush forests and towering alpine peaks, the South Island is an environment that has few equals. It’s these wide open spaces that can also make our region one of the most dangerous. In a life and death situation where every minute counts, air rescue may be a patient’s only chance of survival. This critical lifeline is a completely free service for the patients.
Each mission costs an average of $8,625. The Air Rescue Trust needs to raise $7 million from the community each year. It is the support of local businesses that keeps the service running.
That is why at Bushbuck we are partnering with the Air Rescue Trust as we know first-hand the risks of exploring and enjoying our great outdoors. We 100% believe in what they do and their mission to help save hunters & outdoor enthusiasts, we love knowing that we have done our bit to help keep our customers safe whilst out doing what they love. A danger Patrick Phelps experienced when hunting in the Nelson Ranges.
Patrick succumbed to hypothermia after falling while attempting to traverse a river. Deciding the river was too swift to cross he knew he had to get out another way – the only option was going up and over, “I was wet and as I got higher out of the shelter of the bushline, I became increasingly exposed to the battering wind.” Hypothermia set in quickly despite dry clothes; with a long night ahead Patrick decided to activate his PLB (personal locator beacon). An hour later Patrick heard the “best sound coming over the hill”, the sound of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, Patrick “cried with relief” and 45 minutes later was being treated at Christchurch Hospital.
It is people like Patrick you are helping when you make a donation. Help the Air Rescue Trust by donating at www.airrescue.co.nz, or by making a donation as part of your purchase here at Bushbuck and help save lives.
